ABBY MILLER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Honors a Unionville High School graduate who has demonstrated “Abbytude” with a $5,000.00 scholarship. When asked to describe Abby; friends, family, teachers and coaches use such words and phrases like: “energetic,” “happy,” “lived-large,” “friendly,” “made others laugh,” “complimentary,” “made the party,” “put people at ease,” and “passionate about children.” One mother told a story about how Abby stood up for her son on the school bus when others were teasing him. A classmate related how Abby took her by the hand and introduced her to friends around the school when she was the new girl. Abby was the kind of person who was able to make every friend feel as if they were her best friend. You could always go to her if you were in need. We use the term “Abbytude” to describe her spirit of “living in the moment” and “loving with meaning.” In this light, please tell us how you demonstrate “Abbytude” in your life. In addition to your description, please attach a recommendation from someone of your choosing. This could be a parent, teacher, coach, friend or peer.

STANLEY’S DREAM SCHOLARSHIP
Stanley Edwards had a dream: his dream was to attend college. Unlike many 12-year olds, achieving his dream was complicated by the battle he was fighting against brain cancer. A gifted student and promising athlete, Stanley was diagnosed with a brain tumor at age 12. Due to the location of the tumor, surgery to remove it resulted in the onset of learning disabilities as well as paralysis of his right arm and leg, making school more difficult and forever preventing him from participating in the many sports he loved. Despite these unthinkable obstacles, Stanley persevered toward his dream. Unexpectedly, in 2001 the Edwards family learned that Stanley's tumor had returned. Stanley passed away in January of 2002 at the age of 14. In a tribute to this courageous young man, his family created Stanley's DREAM to continue his legacy. Stanley's DREAM provides college scholarships to graduating seniors and supports childhood brain cancer research by awarding research grants to hospitals. Senior must have participated in school activities, community service, and demonstrates financial need. Essay: Why is it important for you to further your education? Application and more information can be found in the Counseling Center.
