Meeting Minutes Sept, 8, 2009

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 PM. In attendance were: Linda Bowen, Katalin Lindmayer, Paula Massanari, Stephen Bowen, Frank Deady, Carrie Dickman, Tracy Aitken, Dottie Slamon,
Diane Micklin, Karen Halstead, Lori Joseph, Tammy Everitt, Mellissa Nolan, Trish Bohn, Sandy Hayes, Katy Donovan, Hannah Christopher, Lele Galer, Robin Kitay, Ellen Hollinger, Lucy Kosuth, Frank Murphy, Anna-Marie Murphy, Rekha Doraiswamy, Judy McClaskey, Mellissa Jacono, Barb LaChance, Eileen Bushelow, Joanne Bates, Heidi Brown, Linda Fisher

Minutes: The May meeting minutes were reviewed, a motion was made to approve the Minutes; the motion was seconded and passed.

Treasruer’s Report: Linda Fisher went over the proposed budget. The PTO has $52,588.64 to spend this year and is projected to make $44,950. A motion was made to approve the budget for the 2009-2010 school year. The motion was seconded and passed.

Guidance Report: Dr. Deady reported on 10th & 11th graders taking PSAT tests during school on October 14. He is planning on 2 followup nites in Dec. for parents.

Principal’s Report: Paula Massanari reported on what the rest of the school would be doing while the 10th & 11th graders were taking PSAT’s. PSSA testing will be clumped together during 3 weeks in April. The PA state Department of Education continues to look at a “Keystone Exam” as an end of course state standardized test. Nothing has been passed. The district would be in favor of this type of test if it replaced the PSSA’s. She also reported on 2 new initiatives: Parents and Principals before school and Pizza with the Principal during school.

Teacher Rep Report: Carrie Dickman attended the meeting this month and spoke about National Honor Society (NHS), There are 4 hours of mandatory service required. There is also an additional 15 hours of community service required with no more than 5 hours in one place and participation in 2 school activities during the year. The hours have to be submitted within the marking period earned.

Special Presentation by Sharon Parker: Sharon spoke about Pres. Obama’s education speech and how that was handled in the district. She talked about her trip to China, where she met with other people in her position. She would like to arrange to bring a teacher from China to our school for a year for cultural enrichment. There should be successful news about the teacher contracts at the next board meeting. Sharon also stated that taxes were raised by 4.1% which is lower than the expected 6%.

Student Council Representative’s Report: Stephen Bowen stated that the magazine drive has started. The student council is trying something new with discount cards.

Presidents Report: Eileen Bushelow thanked Joanne Bates, Linda Fisher, Lori Joseph, Lele Galer, and Brian Bushelow for the summer mailing, Diane Micklin, Kim Robinson and Katalin Lindmayer for Hospital/Staff Appreciation, Joanne Bates and Eileen Bushelow for NFTT, Tracy Hyde and Cindy Hineman for The Bridge and the webste, Ellen Hollinger for the directory, Rekha Doraiswamy for enews and Joanne Bates, Katy Donovan, Stephen Bates, Matt Christopher, and Brian and Eileen Bushelow for Lock sales. The district PTO’s along with the League of Women Voters are hosting another “Meet the Candidates” night (for School Board) on Oct. 29 from 7:00 to 8:30 at the high school.

Committee Reports:
After Prom: Eileen Bushelow stated that we still NEED CHAIRS
Art Gala: Lele Galer stated that the Art Gala is Nov 13-14 at the high school. The first meeting is Sept. 14th at her house at 9:00
The Bridge: Eileen Bushelow stated that publication dates are Sept, Oct, Dec, Jan, March, May and June
Community Service: Barb LaChance and Linda Fisher stated that the Bike Drive drop-off: Sept 19, Oct.3 and 10th from 9-11
Hospitality: Diane Micklin would like to thank the 20 people that brought food for the teacher appreciation breakfast.
Membership: Hannah Christopher reminded everyone that in order to vote you need to be a member.
Practice Tests: Eileen Bushelow stated that practice tests are this Saturday
Used Book Sale: Eileen Bushelow stated that we still NEED A CHAIRPERSON

Old Business:
SAM: In order to receive periodic updates of your child’s grades, you must go in and re-set this option. Also, everyone will get a paperless report card unless they opt in for one on paper.

New Business: Back to school night is Wed, Sept 16. PTO meeting dates are: Oct. 13th -9:30am, Dec 8th-7:00pm, Jan 12th-9:30pm, March 9th-9:30pm, April 13th-9:30pm, May 25th-7:00pm.

Next PTO Meeting: Tues, Oct 13th, 9:30 AM – Staff Lunch Room
